Sultan Agung Islamic University (UNISSULA) was officially established on May 20, 1962, in the city of Semarang, Central Java, Indonesia. It was founded by the Sultan Agung Waqf Foundation (Yayasan Badan Wakaf Sultan Agung), an organization committed to promoting Islamic education and values in modern Indonesian society.
The university is named after Sultan Agung Hanyokrokusumo, a revered Javanese king and Islamic leader who ruled the Mataram Sultanate in the 17th century. Sultan Agung is remembered for his strong resistance against Dutch colonialism and for his efforts to uphold and spread Islamic teachings across Java. UNISSULA adopts his name and ideals to reflect its mission of producing leaders who are intellectually capable and spiritually grounded.
UNISSULA began with only a few faculties but has since grown into one of the most respected Islamic universities in Indonesia. Today, it offers a wide range of academic programs, including undergraduate, master's, and doctoral degrees in fields such as medicine, law, engineering, economics, Islamic studies, education, and health sciences.
From the beginning, UNISSULA has emphasized the integration of Islamic values into all aspects of university life. Its vision is to become a world-class Islamic university, committed to creating a generation of professionals who are not only skilled in their disciplines but also guided by moral integrity and a strong Islamic worldview.
